In recent years it has become popular with young adults who attend raves or private night clubs. GHB is available in both liquid and powder forms. It is abused for euphoric, sedative and anabolic (bodybuilding) effects. GHB has been reported from being odorless and nearly tasteless, to an extremely salty taste and burning sensation when drank. It appears that the strong salty taste is more common. Users report that GHB induces a state of relaxation. The effects can be felt within 10 to 20 minutes after ingestion. The high lasts about one and a half to four hours. GHB has reportedly been used in cases of date rape. Coma and seizures can occur following abuse of GHB, and when used with methamphetamine, there is an increased risk of seizure. Combining use with other drugs such as alcohol can result in nausea and difficulty breathing. GHB may also produce withdrawal effects, such as insomnia, anxiety, tremors, and sweating.
